Reader’s Edyn

I always felt like I could do something more than just read. Finally, I have found both a creative outlet and a chance to do something meaningful with my reading. This blog was created in appreciation of and tribute to all of the authors who have brought me joy through their books. These reviews are my way of giving back to authors and providing recognition for the hard work that each one completes every day!

**EXCERPTS**

What I Don't Like About You by Laura Burton

“Great. Let’s see who goes first,” Michelle places the bottle on the carpet and sets it into a spin.

My stomach knots each time it faces me, and I chew my lip while keeping my eyes on the bottle.

Please don’t land on me. Please don’t land on me.

The bottle slows right near my knee and my heartrate quickens. Then, it stops.

“Mark, that’s you,” Michelle says brightly.

Cameron nudges Mark, who smirks.

“So Mark, truth or dare?” Michelle asks.“Easy one. Dare,” he says with confidence. I exhale, relieved he didn’t pick truth. At least my secret is safe, for now. I wonder what dare could be so life-changing for Mark. Maybe he’ll have to play chess against Ryder. And lose.

Then he’ll have to admit he’s not all that.

The guy’s ego is so inflated, it’s a wonder how he can walk through doorways with such a big head.

“You need a partner to join this dare,” Michelle says, looking at the piece of paper she picked out from the jar.

Mark’s eyes shoot to mine and I want to kick him in the shin for even considering it.

Don’t you dare.

“I’ll choose Debbie,” he says, his voice dripping with total satisfaction.

My mouth hangs open. I stare at him wide-eyed, as the room erupts into laughter, then I shoot Michelle a look. Her eyes wrinkle at the corners as her face breaks into the evilest grin.

“Perfect,” she said.

Cowboys & Thunderstorms - Jacqueline Winters

“Did you need me to help with something, Lina?”
Only Grams’ favorite hands could call her by her first name. How Ty had wriggled his way up on that list in the few short months he’d worked at the Holbrook Ranch was still a mystery to Kate. She blamed it on that sickeningly sweet charm he wielded so well.
“As a matter of fact, Kate needs you to ride with her out to the north pasture to look for Melvin.”
Ty chuckled. “Never should’ve named that calf.”
Kate shot him a glare, quite certain the depth of her revulsion was readable. “Really, Shadow and I can handle this. Can’t we, girl?” She hoped Shadow would let out a bark in confirmation, but the dog merely glanced between the three—either waiting for direction or to see if anyone was hiding a treat in their hands.
“I’ll come with you,” Ty said, tone suggesting his mind was already made up. “Storm’s close. Better for you not to go out there alone, Kate. You might get stranded.”
“Oh, he’s right!” Grams clapped her hands against her jean-clad thighs. “Wait here a quick minute.” She scurried into the house before Kate could object.
“Stranded?” She narrowed her eyes at Ty. “I have this under control. It’s just a calf.”
“It’s Melvin.”

Love on the Run - Lorana Hoopes
“Graham, this is Ginny. She’s just arrived in town, and she needs a job. A little birdie told me you were looking for some help.”

“I see.” Graham looked at the woman across from him. She appeared clean but mousy. Her eyes flicked only briefly to his before dropping again to her lap. “Do you have any restaurant experience, Ginny?”

A slender hand reached up and tucked a strand of her brown hair behind her ears. “Um, a little. I worked at a fast food restaurant when I first graduated high school.” Her voice was soft and hesitant.

“And how long ago was that?”

Her eyes met his briefly. “Six years ago.”

“Have you worked anywhere since?” Tia asked as if hoping she might get more out of the girl.

The girl shook her head once. “I haven’t been allowed to.”

“What do you mean you haven’t been allowed to?” Tia took the words right out of Graham’s mind.

Ginny looked up and met Tia’s questioning eyes. “For the last few years, I’ve been living with someone. He didn’t let me get a job.”

Pita My Heart by Gigi Blume
*INGRAM*
My eyes dip to the sensitive spot just behind her jaw. She has a freckle there. It dances with her racing pulse. Out and in, out and in. It’s the most tantalizing version of the hokey pokey ever.

I inch closer, slowly closing the space between us. My lips instinctively part and she sucks in a faint, ragged breath—almost indiscernible—but it’s all I can hear. It echoes in my brain. She’s trying to keep her cool but she’s not fooling me. It’s adorable. I go in for the kill. My nose brushes against her hair and I can sense the ripple in the universe as her eyelids flutter. Butterfly wings disturbing the time-space continuum. She rocks my world—the way her vanilla scented shampoo floats through me like a drug, the way she trembles when I’m not even touching her. I don’t touch her. It’s torture, but I don’t. I’m good at keeping my hands to myself when it comes to her. Bing never so much as mentioned it, but hitting on his little sister was an unspoken violation of the bro-code. At least, it was in high school. Now? I’m not so sure.
