Men have gone missing before.
The village of Krume is plagued by a haunted wood and a hungry witch. It’s been that way for as long as Hans and Greta can remember, though they have never seen the witch themselves; no one has.
When men start to disappear once again in the cover of night – their bloody hearts turning up on doorsteps – the village falls into frenzied madness.
Hans and Greta, two outcast orphans, find themselves facing accusations of witchcraft and are met with an ultimatum: burn at the stake, or leave the village forever.
With nowhere else to go, they abandon their only home.
As they venture into the strange forest, their path is fraught with horrific creatures, wild and vivid hallucinations, and a mysterious man tied to the witch’s past.
The Shrike is watching, just beyond the deep darkness of the woods.

**EXCERPT**
“I think you and your brother have done the
impossible,” Barin said lightly. “I should know. I’ve spent enough time in
these woods, and I am no closer to freedom than those dead men you saw.”
Greta’s heart skipped, her blood rushing through
her body.
“Does that mean you can’t leave?”
“Aye,” he said with a solemn tone.
“Why not?” She felt her cheeks flush with a mild
anger. Why could he not leave? Was he afraid of what would happen if he
did?
“I am bound to her by my curse. I cannot leave the
woods.”
Greta floundered for words, stuttering them as she
rushed to say,
“C-Can we break it?”
Barin broke another stick and tossed it into the
fire.
“It’s her will. Unless she finds another to replace
me, like your brother, she will never let me go.”
Greta felt the color drain from her cheeks. The
only way Barin could leave, was for the Shrike to find another. Her
brother…
“Don’t worry. I don’t plan to let her take your
brother,” he said with a nod; his jaw tightened as he stared at her. “I will
get you both to safety.”
But what about your happiness, Barin? Greta’s heart
pounded furiously in her chest.
“That’s not fair,” she whispered.
“Fair or not, it’s the way things are,” he said,
standing to his full height. The light flickered across his face, dancing
around the sharp angles of his cheeks, the sleek line of his nose, and the
curve of his chin. She found herself wondering his age, how much of his life he
had missed out on because of his curse: a wife, a family, a peaceful night in a
quiet village somewhere.
“Don’t you want to be free of her?”
Barin crossed his arms and watched her across the
fire with careful eyes.
“Greta, it comes with a cost. A cost that neither
you nor I would want to pay.”
